Native of the Cordyceps sinensis
Cordyceps sinensis-or Dongchong Xiacao (winter bug, summer grass), as it is known in Chinese-is a fungus described rather mysteriously in the Supplement to the Compendium of Materia Medica as “In winter a bug, in summer a grass, it has hair and can move.” In fact, Dongchong Xiacao broadly refers to more than 300 different fungi that grow on insects, but the type used in Chinese medicine is a true fungus that grows on the larva of bat moths.
